What the transcript puts on the table.
Pandemic led to creation of this Optum research new opportunity, but the MBS Spark.com is a success personally for me because I was going to many campuses for being adjunct faculty professor visiting industry professional.
What was an opportunity turned into success because education in India went online and what we would have achieved, what's all in 12 years, 15 years of technology, helping education become online, happened to me.
That was my response to the pandemic disruption last year.
Original context. Current reading.
Recorded in 2021, this captures the language, platforms and constraints of its time. Read it now by separating those period-specific details from the enduring operating question: how should relevance and AI improve the decision?
Durable tests for the work.
- Start from the customer’s situation, not the channel.
- Use AI to improve a decision or outcome—not to decorate the plan.
What would you keep, change or measure differently if this idea were put to work now?

I was enjoying what I believed was a well-deserved sabbatical and then pandemic happened. I saw the opportunity and the disruption, or the disruption and the opportunity, and it led to two new ideas. One earlier one was the revival of the earlier idea and the new avatar, and the other was a brand new opportunity. So that was my response to the pandemic disruption last year. So I revived Optum research to tap into finding out how brands, especially marketing teams in India were navigating the pandemic disrupted Bharat. So that's the first idea that took shape last year. Also, last year I saw a lot of commotion, confusion with young MBA students who were just about to join the campus.
Remember last year, March, April 2020, May, June is the time when we had fresh intake of MBA students across campuses in India. And there was a lot of confusion, commotion. So started a journey called MBA Spark, Spark.com, which is a leadership program for fresh MBA students to help them get industry ready. So these were two opportunities I saw last year. And that led to creation of two new ideas. One is the journey of my mind, which is Optum research. This is the website is Optumresearch.ion. And the other is MBSspark.com, which is meant for MBA students. So those are two ideas, journey of my mind, which is Optum research and MBS Spark journey of my heart. It's a combination of both.
It's a combination of both because the Optum research is a new opportunity. That's the way I look at it. Pandemic led to creation of this Optum research new opportunity, but the MBS Spark.com is a success personally for me because I was going to many campuses for being adjunct faculty professor visiting industry professional. And last year I was supposed to start as an adjunct faculty with a marketing program of an MBA campus in Delhi, a very leading campus in Delhi, and then Corona happened. So I thought that was my key to get started. What was an opportunity turned into success because education in India went online and what we would have achieved, what's all in 12 years, 15 years of technology, helping education become online, happened to me.
It happened in a compressed mode within four months. So I call it a success because education has been transformed in India. Work from home, limited access to physical facilities. So that for me was a success, not just for education going online, but even personally, for me, I was able to share my insights, inspire perhaps 244 odd first year MBA students from a hundred plus campuses. I can't imagine doing that if pandemic wouldn't have happened. I would have been limited to one campus in the physical world. So I call that a success. I call that a success.
