Read data and measurement as the primary operating question in this record.

  2. 02

IP05 · SOURCE SIGNALS

What the transcript puts on the table.

This whole data driven marketing and data driven processes has become mainstream now.
All these, for example, the latest example, which is not really general marketing, but this whole zooming of Zomato, the whole sort of ecosystem is based on promoting itself on the digital media.
Maybe seven, eight, ten years back, we all would treat digital marketing or data driven marketing as an adjunct of the main mass media kind of campaigns which big brands ran.
IP06 · HOW MARKETING HAS CHANGED

Original context. Current reading.

Recorded in 2021, this captures the language, platforms and constraints of its time. Read it now by separating those period-specific details from the enduring operating question: how should AI and attention improve the decision?

IP07 · TIMELESS RULES

Durable tests for the work.

  1. Use AI to improve a decision or outcome—not to decorate the plan.
  2. Earn attention with relevance before scaling reach.
IP08 · THE QUESTION NOW

What would you keep, change or measure differently if this leadership reflection were put to work now?

DMA is unique because it puts the entire focus of its existence, its interactions with industry professionals on the digital space. And maybe seven, eight, ten years back, we all would treat digital marketing or data driven marketing as an adjunct of the main mass media kind of campaigns which big brands ran. But now in the last couple of years, especially now in the lockdown period, I think it's really become a raison d'etre for lots of businesses surviving on the basis of data driven marketing. All these, for example, the latest example, which is not really general marketing, but this whole zooming of Zomato, the whole sort of ecosystem is based on promoting itself on the digital media. So I think it has really found its face under the sun,

this whole data driven marketing and data driven processes has become mainstream now. And I think DMA's role is really in showcasing excellence in this area and also seeking a lot of inputs from practitioners of data driven marketing. Brand masters was a great initiative taken by DMA, got together lots of industry veterans and professionals based on category of business you were in. So I think it really forced a lot of new thinking to come out. And because everybody in a particular episode was for particular industry, a lot of salience was increased for participants and hopefully for people in that industry. The Eco Awards again is a great initiative to really reward people who are doing.
