Three takeaways worth carrying forward.
- 01
Read data and measurement as the primary operating question in this record.
- 02
Test its connection to storytelling and attention against the speaker’s reasoning in the transcript.
- 03
Keep the 2021 source context visible before carrying the lesson into a current decision.
What the transcript puts on the table.
There's one definitive organization who spends inordinate amount of time and effort to try and understand data-driven marketing and insight.
That was always playing a second fiddle because this country was all about large narratives and large campaigns.
To me, DMA has remained in the forefront of data and insight for many years.
Original context. Current reading.
Recorded in 2021, this captures the language, platforms and constraints of its time. Read it now by separating those period-specific details from the enduring operating question: how should AI and attention improve the decision?
Durable tests for the work.
- Use AI to improve a decision or outcome—not to decorate the plan.
- Earn attention with relevance before scaling reach.

To me, DMA has remained in the forefront of data and insight for many years. There's one definitive organization who spends inordinate amount of time and effort to try and understand data-driven marketing and insight. DMA would be one of them. I have been mostly associated with ECO Awards. I have judged ECO Awards off late, but before that from my agency and some of my clients, they all participated in the ECO Awards. So I know that again, ECO was a very definitive award for marketing, which was done at a granular level. And that was always playing a second fiddle because this country was all about large narratives and large campaigns. I think DMA had done an excellent job in getting people's attention.
Before data became fashionable, I think DMA has been doing this work. And I have attended some of workshops and meetings of DMA. And DMA always get good people, you know, thought-provoking questions. Many times, I found their ability to surprise you with content very, very good. So that is BMA for me.
