IP05 · SOURCE SIGNALS

What the transcript puts on the table.

During a pandemic time, if the existence of the organization is about helping people navigate through the crisis, I think then I understand why a corporation is needed in a society.
Another set of people who really opened my eyes to during this pandemic period are the set of businessmen of another type.
I think without the local Kirana stores, the country would have come to a standstill and people would have died without food and stuff.
IP06 · HOW MARKETING HAS CHANGED

Original context. Current reading.

Recorded in 2021, this captures the language, platforms and constraints of its time. Read it now by separating those period-specific details from the enduring operating question: how should attention and relevance improve the decision?

IP07 · TIMELESS RULES

Durable tests for the work.

  1. Earn attention with relevance before scaling reach.
  2. Start from the customer’s situation, not the channel.
IP08 · THE QUESTION NOW

What would you keep, change or measure differently if this campaign analysis were put to work now?

What is the pandemic defining? If there is one defining image of the pandemic, it's the healthcare worker with the mark of masks defined the pandemic for me. Because that actually showed that there could be pandemic, but compassion is not dead. People are still giving their life to save other people's lives. And if I have to remember the pandemic through one thing, that's the image I want to remember this. And it so happens that Dove has a positioning which is about everything around us is beautiful and we need to preserve it. So even courage is beautiful. Everything is beautiful. So in that context, it also worked out really, really well for the brand. If there is one thing I remember from last 18 months' campaign,

I would remember that Dove campaign because that's the image I want to retain in my head. Other than that, I want to actually appreciate over the last 15 months the effort from two sets of people. One is most of the e-commerce companies. All of a sudden they realized that more than increasing their valuation and increasing the orders, their job is to serve people when they need it. That was a fundamental change in their approach for most of the e-commerce brands, not just one. And therefore I want to actually acknowledge it saying, I've been thinking about it really hard for a while saying, what is the social reason for a corporate to exist? Is it to maximize profit and give money to shareholders, which are only a few in number?

Or is it to serve a slightly bigger purpose? During a pandemic time, if the existence of the organization is about helping people navigate through the crisis, I think then I understand why a corporation is needed in a society. And most of the e-commerce companies change their approach during this period to make sure that they are becoming helpful rather than they are just becoming mediums of transaction. Another set of people who really opened my eyes to during this pandemic period are the set of businessmen of another type. They are the local Kirana stores. I think without the local Kirana stores, the country would have come to a standstill and people would have died without food and stuff. Because where I like all the delivery companies and all,

but those are run by those IIM boys, you know, like I know I'm one of them. So we claim that we understand the market very well in, you know, across the nooks and crannies, but we don't, you know, we live in very protected environment. And so they tried their best. And in the second wave, they came good. But in the first wave, they were out of their depth. The Kirana stores figured out ways and means of serving people in a manner that was unprecedented. And I thought that, you know, people who wrote that Kirana stores will be history and it will all be supermarkets and online and everything. I hope they understood what is the importance of people who understand the ground level reality of the country.
