Three takeaways worth carrying forward.
- 01
Read social media as the primary operating question in this record.
- 02
Test its connection to leadership and relevance against the speaker’s reasoning in the transcript.
- 03
Keep the 2021 source context visible before carrying the lesson into a current decision.
What the transcript puts on the table.
I think so what Zomato has done that is while Swiggy uses traditional media to establish itself, Zomato used the new age media tremendously well.
While doing so, it's established a brand also prominent, not just like the brand, but the numbers, the business numbers have spiked.
Then I see their ads and I see a smile on people's faces and food brings a smile on people's faces.
Original context. Current reading.
Recorded in 2021, this captures the language, platforms and constraints of its time. Read it now by separating those period-specific details from the enduring operating question: how should attention and relevance improve the decision?
Durable tests for the work.
- Earn attention with relevance before scaling reach.
- Start from the customer’s situation, not the channel.

There are a lot of chatter in the marketing circle that this is not the right kind of marketing, the product is not upfront, but I just thought they hit it out of the ballpark. I'm a big fan of their go-to-market strategy. The advertising has been clutter-breaking and it's educated, entertained, and equal measures. And while doing so, it's established a brand also prominent, not just like the brand, but the numbers, the business numbers have spiked. So I love what Cred has done. I love their ballsiness. I love the adventurism that they brought back to marketing. I'm like big fan. I'm a huge fan of Rahul Dravid. In fact, Rahul Dravid is brand ambassador to Card A. Cole. So we had a campaign last year and he did very well for us.
But I think just the way they used Dravid was insane. But then I thought they could not top it up, but then they topped it up with the whole boy band of the Indian cricketers, Srinath, Maninder Singh, and Prasad. Insane. I'm like, you know, to do, to better what you've already done is crazy good. And especially in such a short span of time, that's all. So Cred would definitely be one. The second would be Swiggy. Swiggy has been consistent in delivering sustained impact through their advertising campaign. They've understood the category quotes and the cultural nuances around the business of food. They haven't like hard pushed their business of food. I think the great thing that they've done is they've understood the category
codes and the cultural nuances and they put them together. And then I see their ads and I see a smile on people's faces and food brings a smile on people's faces. The ads bring a smile on people's faces. And I think it's a, it's a beautiful combination. What Swiggy has done is you have to take your hat off for them. Another entity I would like to talk about is his biggest competitor is Zomato. And it's very rare that like both the players in the same space are doing so well. And maybe it's like Pepsi, Coke, war all over again. And then it's not that they're doing the same thing really well. I think so what Zomato has done that is while Swiggy uses traditional media to establish itself, Zomato used the new age media tremendously well.
The ability to generate free earned media is second to none. I think they are so good with popular culture, movement marketing, that it's a great learning for me. They understood what matters on social media and how will their audience read. So a lot to learn from what they do on social media. But yeah, these three, yeah, they really excite me and they push me to do better. So a lot of people are so good.
